Controversy: From inception to release, various issues (eg. financial, project title, local support) hampered the initial stages. The budget: The budget (eventually $4,000) was mostly to be used for recording at Songbird Studio Atlanta
and for disc production at Georgia Record Pressing. Three-quarters of the budget was funded by Calabro with the last quarter contributed by local businesses, including Record Bar being the only outlet of this chain or any record store to ever carry the Lp. Calabro contacted Bob Geldof's label, CBS Records, about participating early on, but neither they or local celebrity Kenny Rogers ever responded to contacts.
After selling less than three dozen copies, the second pressing of 500 discs was cancelled. The beginnings: Promotion of the conception began in January 1985, before We Are the World was released, when the downtown Athens' kiosks were used in advertising a search for bands. No one responded to the initial typed flyers which gave detailed information. The second push was created by kids; an artsy multi-colored attention-grabber, again being attached onto kiosks. This effort resulted in garnering submissions but also angered locals who had not seen the previous professional flyers and attacked the project for starting out amateuristic.
Once bands were chosen, benefits were scheduled for local clubs
while news stories were contributed by area papers Classic City Live, The Athens Observer, and the University of Georgia's The Red & Black. Also, the Hawkinsville Dispatch And News ran a story highlighting an Athen's musician with ties to their community.
Although the benefits were proceeded by news press, they were poorly attended. The first concert brought in $160 although a hundred went to the club sound man. A similar benefit garnered $40 at the end of the night. These setbacks brought backlash against apathy from the same papers which, in turn, brought more disparaging comments from the locals.
The original title of the Lp was to reflect the worldwide attention given to the Athens music scene from success of local bands The B-52's, R.E.M, Love Tractor, The Squalls, Rum Jungle, et. al. The title was to suggest how inspiration from Athenians could spread to other U.S. towns. But many felt it was too awkward of a name for an Lp. So, the title "Drawing Blood: Transfusion to the Ailing Cities of Progression" became "Who's Not Who in Athens, GA." This revamped moniker was to be a proclamation of bands yet discovered. The Lp's cover design was to be created voluntarily, but the artist resigned. This rendered the final look to be nothing but the Lp title, and a large question mark, and various statements... all typed onto paper then glued to the jacket.
Eventually, without further funding, most of the Lp's were shipped to radio stations with only a red question mark attached or nothing at all.
In 2014, a tape-to-CD version (cover work being an image of the defunct Georgia Theater), was released.

Amazon reports no sales since. The only local critique of the released Lp came from The Athens' Banner Herald. Although the critic liked three of the cuts, the rest of the album had "little sense of continuity" and was "suffering from an obvious inferiority complex..."
The reviews, however, across the country were highly different with the LP charting with positive accolades and Heavy Rotation at many stations.
